IMO, this random non race photo from @spartanracegreece is one of my favorites & most powerful from the entire 3 race weekend. This is immediately following the beast & I just needed a moment to myself to take it all in. I even had to ask people, "please, give me a minute" because it was super emotional & I wanted to experience it. Emotional because you realize all it takes & took to get to THIS exact moment. Emotional because you realize you pulled it off, are still healthy & in 1 piece. Emotional because you realize you met a huge season goal. Emotional because you realize you're most important race of the year (one stolen away for 2 years) is over after a full year of focused build up. Emotional because you realize it'll be another looong year before you might experience it again. In a way, it's a capture of a melancholy moment & the instant the cycle begins to get back to this same moment. A moment that has continued to stay with me to this day simply because it was captured on film.

To train while sick or not. We can debate the merits of whether you should train while sick all day long. But I'm just going to tell you how I approach it. Essentially, unless I'm on my death bed, I'm doing some semblance of a structured workout. I may not be able to put out intensity. I may cut back on the duration, speed, pace, weight or originally planned workout(s), but I still do something focused. It is extremely rare for me to do nothing while sick. And I've been this way since the 90s. So to be honest, I don't really care what other people's opinions on the topic are because I know what works for me & I know what I need as much for my mental sanity as I do physical sanity. And sometimes it's not as much about needing the physical performance, which generally isn't great anyway, as it is what I need mentally to feel good about the day. Plus, there's something to be said about pushing through a routine even when you're feeling low. I think too many people quickly jump at the opportunity to embrace the day off versus embracing the suck. It's not going to kill you. At worst, it "may" just prolong getting back to 100%.

Listen to my opening words in this video from @spartanracegreece '22. I say "the best, truest, most real" Spartan WC in my opinion. But why?

→All 3 distances must be raced, which favors no 1 person. You have to have speed, endurance & stamina to last & put together 3 quality races over 3 days of B2B2B racing. Therefore, it's clearly truer proof of the best spartan racer.

→We're racing all 3 core @spartanrace distances we've had since day 1, not just an arbitrarily picked Beast distance. And, It's on terrain that doesn't cater to any 1 person (like big mtn races do). Therefore, it's clearly truer proof of the best spartan racer.

→It's in the EU, so we get a far larger, higher caliber, more diverse cross-section of @spartan athletes from more parts of the world as it's an easier to access destination that's more affordable.

→The parade of nations, at night, thru the city streets, hugely attended by the locals & many 100s of athletes from ±50 countries starting in a classic European town square & ending up on stage at the statue of Leonidas. Tahoe didn't equal this level of the experience IMO.

→Far more bang for the travel & effort buck. Spend $$$ for a "WC" that is 1 race on 1 day OR spend that same $ & get so much more. The financial & effort ROI is undeniably higher.

= It all creates a vibe, energy & an electric environment you have to experience to appreciate. EU knows how to put on a show. Having done many worldwide WC events in my USAT career, it's the closest I've ever felt in the OCR community to a true & proper internationally attended "world championship" quality event.

💥In fact, I'd go as far as saying that if I were in charge, I'd 100% drop our 1 race "WC" in favor of "TWC" & rebrand "TWC" as thee gold standard "WC".💥

Life has taught me that "love" is something of a c

Life has taught me that "love" is something of a commodity. It's bought, sold & traded like stocks. It's upgraded like a car. It's disgarded like old clothes. It waxes & wanes like the moon. It's turned on/off like a faucet out of convenience. This is my honest & personal experience w/ love. It wasn't until Rambo's entry into my life (& his passing 2yrs ago today) that I started to question if I've ever actually been in love. IDK. And the reason IDK is because I felt something for Rambo I've never felt for people (before or since). I had a willingness to go miles for him I haven't had for others. I made sacrifices for him, no questions asked, others couldn't get out of me. He softened my harder edges, introduced me to compassion, showed me what unconditional love feels like. I have a continuous deep sense of loss & a void in my soul I don't have for others I've parted ways with. Therefore, I can only rectify this "love" as the deepest & truest love I've personally experienced (& still do.) Am I broken? Possibly. Does it defy human logic? Possibly. But it's profoundly real & one of the most powerful, best lasting experiences of my life. Attributing this level of life impact & love to Rambo is probably the highest honor I can give him. He gave "love" the most real meaning to me. If I'm fortunate enough to feel it again, I'll embrace it. If not, I feel blessed to have been so profoundly changed & affected by a tiny 13# fiesty #Yorkie who made me smile & LOL every day. And that will be w/ me for life. RIP bud. Not a day goes by where I don't think of you fondly & miss you terribly. 🌈 💔 ❤️ 🐕

TWC 2022 DAY 3 BEAST: waking up to pouring rain is

TWC 2022 DAY 3 BEAST: waking up to pouring rain is not the start to a race day anyone wants. But at the 11th hour, just before my wave start, the faucet got shut of & although the course was caked & soaked w/ wet soupy muck, standing h20 & heavy sticky clay mud, my body responded awesomely to the course. In fact, one of the things I'm concluding after seeing how well my body responded the last 3 days & having been to the #spartantwc in Sparta Greece 3x now, is that I feel like my body is actually, finally, now soaking in the benefits & has adapted & started to demonstrate benefits from the Colorado life change I made just over a year ago. Because I felt levels of leg strength, levels of running ability, pacing & gear changes, transition speeds in & out of obstacles, attacking every obstacle w/no hesitation, heart rate levels & perceived efforts that I haven't felt all year... until now. And the bottom line is, I raced this Beast like a Beast. Including nailing the double spears.

With my 7th place AG Beast finish, I also solidified my top 10 GC AG category finish of 8th overall. A yearly main goal 👊 And a 113th overall rank of all 726 finishing AG racers, so in the top 15-16%. #missionaccomplished

TWC 2022 DAY 2 SUPER: Wow did I feel great! I felt

TWC 2022 DAY 2 SUPER: Wow did I feel great! I felt good & solid yesterday, but today I leveled up & I knew it while I was racing. I was even having conversations w/ myself such as, "man, I feel fuckin good!!" Which perpetually bumps my spirits up & propels me. I've raced long enough to know when something special is happening & it was mainly due to my run. Sprints are not my forte, Supers are more in my wheelhouse. I executed obstacles well, but the run is where I'm feeling improvement (acceleration & maintaining pace). I was motoring start to finish & I just put it all together today, including redemption on the spear. (And hopefully some video surfaces of the final sprint off battle I had from the multirig to & through the finish line. It was the very definition of #letsrace 👊 & I just eeked it out). I was able to take 5th in my AG (so 2x 🇺🇲 in the top 5 today w/ @cjdrosa) & that moved me back up into 7th overall (in my top 10 AG goal contention going into tomorrow). BUT tomorrows Beast has the potential (distance, number of obstacles, weather threat, day 3 body toll) to really wreck havoc on the general classifications. So #itaintovertillitsover 👍

TWC 2022 DAY 1 SPRINT: First off, I felt superb. I ran strong, I had gears, I had surges, I even had a battle that started just before the z-wall, into the olive trees, & down thru the final speedier town push. It's what I look forward to the most in racing; a head to head battle. I didn't catch his name or country, but we had a back & fourth right up until the spear. Where I earned my 1st burpees of the year. Decent throw, didn't stick. It seems to be the story of the day. But, it is what it is, we all had the same obstacle & so that's racing. But it pushed me out of my goal of a top 10 AG finish. But there's 2 races left, so I just have to shake it off & #keephammering in tomorrows Super to try to pull myself back up into the top 10 #letsrace PS - how about that atlas carry 😮

How about 10x1 min hill repeats + 10min of tempo followed by some beach & swim time in the Aegean Sea which is all in the shadow of the famous ±2500yr old Poseidon's Temple located in Sounion Greece? It was a welcome change after yesterday's nonstop 8hrs of hustle & walk time through the Acropolis & narrow congested streets of Athens on hard & unforgiving granite, marble & concrete. This close to #spartantwc2022 it's just about keeping the engine idling.

IDK what you do after 22hrs of int'l travel, but what I do is relax for a few hours, change, then run down to Athens Panathenaic Stadium (Παναθηναϊκό Στάδιο) & bang out 2 sets of 5x progressive speed laps w/ a 1 lap rest, then run home. If you consider yourself a runner, how can you show up in Athens & not run (legitimately) some laps around a true piece of Olympic history? And, blow out the pipes after being a slug for so many hours.

Yearly, on the anniversary of my '01 accident, I post this video because I believe it's true motivation & inspiration for others going thru something heavy if you juxtapose what you hear & see in the vid {vs} see from me today.

This year I'm not going to re-tell the story of what happened. I've done that & you can go find that story here. But what I'm going to tell you is a story that I've not written publicly before, but I find super interesting.

Years after this accident I was boarding a plane in Rome heading home after a 4th duathlon world championship since the accident & after being told I was done racing. As I'm boarding the plane, who do I see in 1st class? I see my spine doctor! Who during that time, was a field leader in terms of spine surgery (I saw him in magazines, he wrote college textbooks, he was a key player at Scripts Hospital in La Jolla). I said, "Dr G, do you remember me?" He said, "oh yeah Kevin, I remember you." I said, "know where I'm coming from?" He said, "no, where?" & I said, "I'm coming from my 4th duathlon world championship since my accident."

Can you grasp the statistical unlikelihood & serendipitousness of that moment in time happening? But then again, everything about how that entire life changing event played itself out, defies most conventional statistical outcomes. See you in Greece 👊
