So after a week of +70° days, shorts & t-shirts, I wasn't expecting to wake up to 25° & a few inches of snow. I've been so focused on watching weather in Sydney Australia, I stopped paying attention to my own. But, the show must go on so it's business as usual. I've trained thru far far worse, I was just banking on this weather being over. It did impact my speed as a ±1:30 workout took me 1:48. But the work got done as planned.

This is the last heavy carry workout I'll do for weeks. And I made it a strong one by setting a '24 PR time (1:04:14). But no worries, I've got months of consistently doing it in the bank. Even thru the depth of snows & winter. The next time I carry a bucket, sandbag, log, it will be in the heat of competition @spartanraceau.

Between Boulder, Lyons & Estes, I've been riding these CO front range canyons since the 90s. They carry a particular history for me & I have a fondness for them. So when the weather finally cracked 70° this weekend, I pounced. And wasn't disappointed. In fact, this has been my favorite workout so far in '24. My goal was to ride from my house, up St Vrain (36) canyon, thru Estes Park & to the Fall River RMNP entry gate. Not a particularly long or hard ride, but it's beautiful & all work up to it. Plus, my 1st big road ride of the season. Days like this make me cherish how free & alive I am. Solo climbing a long canyon (16.5mi & 1:45), entering the forest, smelling the pine, warm MTN breezes, wind thru the trees, elk & big horn sheep crossing the road. It's special. I won't even bother trying to explaining it further as I'll fall woefully short.

That was far tougher than expected. It was much shorter than my typical Fri tread run (7.7mi vs 13) but the intervals were run at a shorter, but harder & higher pace than typical. 8x 2:00 at high Z³ hitting +165bpm @ ±6:55-6:57 pace w/ only a short 1:00 Z² "recovery". I felt good & strong, but the intervals were definitely taxing. I worked the entire 2min & by interval 4-5 I was suffering, but able. Garmin pre estimated 6.1mi, treadmill final was 7.7, Garmin final was 7.2. Doing the post run tread calibration is helping align distances between the tread & Garmin.

Yesterday marked 3 weeks of consistent hill repeat workouts. I don't need the '66 day average' to make something a habit. I never have. Like everything I do, I already knew in week 1, just by starting, I was already locked in. How? Because IF I'm going to even start something, I already know it will benefit me, so I'm instantly committed. One of my most valuable athletic strengths I've used for 3+ decades of competition is being able to jump right into a pattern & reliably, consistently repeating it.

Of all the pieces in this 90min OCR workout {tire drag, run, tire drag, hoist, spear throw, rope climb, run, atlas stone, run, 5x bag toss, heavy carry, run, heavy carry, 5x bag toss, run, multirig - repeat 5x} I asked in a story what people thought was the 1 item that spiked my HR the highest @ 160bpm. The most common answer = heavy carry. But everyone was wrong (as I expected which is why I asked 😁). The answer = multirig. Even my new 88.5# atlas stone 40yd carry didn't match it. Any thoughts as to how or why? Because I have some 😎

This video captures 3 reasons why I left SoCal after +30yrs & bought this CO mountain property; hanging more w/ my brother, shooting w/out fear of hassle, my proximity to Roosevelt National Forest. We can walk right out my door & onto forest property as it boarders 3/4 of my acreage. My brother was sighting in a few new pistols & red dots, I was shooting my @czusafirearms Scorpion EVO (9mm) purely for fun. I've got some sweet furniture changes coming soon to my Scorpion👍

A "simple" tactic I use to stay in a small HR inte

A "simple" tactic I use to stay in a small HR interval range (3bpm) w/out having to constantly change the speed of the treadmill. Ideally, I want to be somewhere near the middle of the treadmill. But if my HR is too low, I just move up on the treadmill (run faster) to increase HR. Conversely, if my HR is too high, I'll slide to the back of the treadmill (run slower) to reduce my HR. This works effectively when I already know a treadmill speed/pace that should reliably produce a certain HR (eg, 8 should put me right at 148-150bpm) so I'm not fidgeting w/ treadmill buttons (which messes w/ breathing, pace, stride, focus) as my @garmin watch alerts me if a change is needed. Then, I just float up/back as needed if I drift out of the range.

This is as close to a gym type workout as you'll ever see me do. It's my version of lifting weights & a strength specific effort. It's not about heavy weights & lifting PRs, I don't care about that shit, it's about HIIT & moving faster w/ lighter weights. I want speed, strength & stamina w/ a strong strength to weight ratio.

AND contrary to most regurgitated fitness opinions, I don't care about "form". Form is overrated & not real-life. My life isn't lived on a perfectly sterile, knee wrist waist braced, flat surface, in perfect climate control w/ chalk, spotters, platform shoes, fresh & a low HR, measured in seconds of performance. My life is lived outside, w/ jacked HRs, in all climates, fatigued, on uneven surfaces where I fall, get cut & w/out superfluous body support devices & my performance is measured in hours. I'm a product of actual experience, not internet theory.
