Australia 🇦🇺 | Picton | Race 3 | Beast - A key reason for this entire race trip was the Beast race. Why? A) earn the Beast & get my ticket punched for TWC @spartanracegreece as #teamusa 🇺🇲 captain to set the team tone to earn my trifecta & lock in my qualification proper like B) try to snatch a #spartanagegroup podium in a National Championship race on another continent C) race a new int'l @spartanrace venue. Goals, goals, goals. And by taking that top spot, I also locked in 2nd in my AG for the fastest combined time (behind Tony, a real monster of an athlete) of all 3 races since all 3 were competitive waves like Greece. This makes my 7th OCR series championship podium + spartan races 180,181,182. All of which are competitive. No open wave, fun run stats padding on my race resume.

Australia 🇦🇺 | Picton | Race 2 | Sprint - just a few hours after the Super, w/ a long @thedopehq ice bath & copious fluids taken in, we went again in the competitive Sprint (old school trifecta weekend style). I actually "felt" better in the Sprint, had a clean race (including doing the balance beam properly & going 2 for 2 on the spears) & felt like I raced smoother, picked better lines, had better flow, felt less tense & more relaxed. However, I could only muster a 5th in this race on a sun dryed course. (But a consistent day 1, 2 race, top 5 AG result at least.) It's been a while since I've been able to race a 2-a-day since USA no longer has competitive Sprint waves on Trifecta weekends (& I don't do open waves). And the body responded as I'd hoped. Why? Because it knows what it's doing & what's expected 👊

Friday I'll tell you about the Beast. The AUS National Championship race. My last opportunity to make a statement for #teamusa 🇺🇲

Australia 🇦🇺 | Picton | Race 1 | Super - Although I actually felt good on the run, I didn't make a podium happen. I was 4th & that was thanks to a stupid mistake on the balance beam. The rules state 1 foot on the down beam before you can jump & cross past the obstacle end line for a completion. We don't have this obstacle in the USA. So, I made the jump from 3/4 thru the beam to land past the obstacles end line. You can do this on other balance obstacles like the slackline & old school "log hop" (most of you have never even seen or done that one as we stopped it years ago). So, that's a failure mode, so that's a penalty loop, so that was a game over error for a podium as it was a long run loop. But I ran strong & performed well otherwise. Not the start I wanted, but I was still in the mix w/ 2 races yet remaining.

Wednesday, I'll post up about race 2 a few hours later = the Sprint.

A few days in the life of living the run & beach l

A few days in the life of living the run & beach life in Sydney Australia; run, beach, run, beach, repeat. It's not a bad life & I'm good at it. Hell, I lived it for decades in San Diego. But, as of today's final run/beach combo, I'm moving inland for a few days to do the job I actually came all the way to Australia to do... @spartanraceau a Trifecta Weekend (3 races in 2 days) in Picton NSW. It starts tomorrow w/ a 10k Super, 2hr rest, then a 5k Sprint. We follow up on Sunday w/ the 21k Beast. If all goes to plan, I'll earn my official entry into @spartanracegreece TWC in just 1 weekend. And as #teamusa captain, I want to set that tone.

A beautiful run with some short intervals along the Coogee Bondi coastal walkway to keep the engine primed for this weekends @spartanraceau races, followed by a dip in the South Pacific Ocean (Tasman Sea). Where I'm staying now is virtually the same (vibe, towns, coast, views) as where I lived in North county San Diego. I may live in the mountains now, but I come from an ocean town so this is 2nd nature living to me.

So after a week of +70° days, shorts & t-shirts, I wasn't expecting to wake up to 25° & a few inches of snow. I've been so focused on watching weather in Sydney Australia, I stopped paying attention to my own. But, the show must go on so it's business as usual. I've trained thru far far worse, I was just banking on this weather being over. It did impact my speed as a ±1:30 workout took me 1:48. But the work got done as planned.

This is the last heavy carry workout I'll do for weeks. And I made it a strong one by setting a '24 PR time (1:04:14). But no worries, I've got months of consistently doing it in the bank. Even thru the depth of snows & winter. The next time I carry a bucket, sandbag, log, it will be in the heat of competition @spartanraceau.

Between Boulder, Lyons & Estes, I've been riding these CO front range canyons since the 90s. They carry a particular history for me & I have a fondness for them. So when the weather finally cracked 70° this weekend, I pounced. And wasn't disappointed. In fact, this has been my favorite workout so far in '24. My goal was to ride from my house, up St Vrain (36) canyon, thru Estes Park & to the Fall River RMNP entry gate. Not a particularly long or hard ride, but it's beautiful & all work up to it. Plus, my 1st big road ride of the season. Days like this make me cherish how free & alive I am. Solo climbing a long canyon (16.5mi & 1:45), entering the forest, smelling the pine, warm MTN breezes, wind thru the trees, elk & big horn sheep crossing the road. It's special. I won't even bother trying to explaining it further as I'll fall woefully short.

That was far tougher than expected. It was much shorter than my typical Fri tread run (7.7mi vs 13) but the intervals were run at a shorter, but harder & higher pace than typical. 8x 2:00 at high Z³ hitting +165bpm @ ±6:55-6:57 pace w/ only a short 1:00 Z² "recovery". I felt good & strong, but the intervals were definitely taxing. I worked the entire 2min & by interval 4-5 I was suffering, but able. Garmin pre estimated 6.1mi, treadmill final was 7.7, Garmin final was 7.2. Doing the post run tread calibration is helping align distances between the tread & Garmin.

Yesterday marked 3 weeks of consistent hill repeat workouts. I don't need the '66 day average' to make something a habit. I never have. Like everything I do, I already knew in week 1, just by starting, I was already locked in. How? Because IF I'm going to even start something, I already know it will benefit me, so I'm instantly committed. One of my most valuable athletic strengths I've used for 3+ decades of competition is being able to jump right into a pattern & reliably, consistently repeating it.
