"Victory is built on preparation, not luck" ~Sun T "Victory is built on preparation, not luck" ~Sun Tzu

I'd argue that a productive life means you are always in a state of preparation.

You can run. You can hide. But only for so long. At some point, you have to prepare and act. Indecision is a dangerous trait.

Shirtless, vitamin D, tattoos, cardio, #functional Shirtless, vitamin D, tattoos, cardio, #functionalfitness & strength at 7,000 ft in February! I'm under no illusions that we could get 3ft of snow & drop to 0° in 24hrs. That's mountain living. But for now, I'll take the sun on my skin. And, I feel strong, fit & ready to race right now. My season opening race in Valmoral 🇫🇷 next month can't come quick enough.

I've been training in the Hidden Valley area of @r I've been training in the Hidden Valley area of @rockynps now for years. This area is a coveted ski touring area. In all my years, I have never ever seen anyone run up & down these mountain faces like I do. Sometimes people look at me like I'm crazy, applaud, ask me if I forgot my skis (which I'll remind them that running, I can & do go places they don't & can't) or ask me why I'm doing it.

And, I have a reason.

The type of racing I do isn't skiing. But it is a lot of mountain efforts. Long grinding hours running or speed hiking up & down mountains. I've found running this area in the snow is phenomenally good for getting my legs strong + lungs in condition for the long grinding efforts I do in OCR mountain races. (And this area isn't enjoyable in the summer as it's not an actual trail system.) But in the winter, it's fantastic as it's a lot of vertical gain & effort in a short bit of mileage. So I maximize using it in the winter & often do it 2x a weekend for 10 or more winter/spring weeks.

You see, I have a plan.

Home defense. Property defense. Self defense. Bad Home defense. Property defense. Self defense. Bad people with bad intentions don't care about laws. Only the law abiding care. Stay prepared. Stay aware. Stay frosty.

A very unexpected result for my 9x Heavy Carry wor A very unexpected result for my 9x Heavy Carry workout. But, I knew it was happening as it was happening. So I just kept it all gas & no brakes thinking I just might eek out a fast time. But when I dropped the final carry (bucket) to head into the final run & saw my time, I do this enough to know precisely where I was & what the split time I saw meant. Well, 1:02:51 was my final time. That's wicked fast for this workout & rivals last year's PR time achieved in Aug! And it was 2:37 faster than last months baseline time. And it's only Feb.

Looking forward to my 1st race next month in 🇫🇷 in the ❄️

Big goal for Saturday. Cruise up to 12,000' & work Big goal for Saturday. Cruise up to 12,000' & work on some of my alpine mountain skills: set snow anchors (snow pickets), work on descents (@petzl_official grigri), ascents (petzl ascenders), on 9mm static line. And I picked the best day of the season so far. The deepest snow we've + a bluebird day.

It was during the 6:26 of prep, standing on a 2ft ledge at 11,980' in 11° that I realized 2 things: 1) I'm rusty on my alpine gear skills. I was fumbling too much. Which got worse as I rigged my setup once anchored = wasted time, energy & effort. Embarrassing, but true. 2) my kit was lacking valuable webbing lengths so I could sling anchors around big ass rocks. My 2 snow pickets worked, but I'd have liked a 3rd anchor.

But this is precisely why practice matters. It revealed a weakness in my alpine game.

Ride → Run → Ride Today's winter #duathlontrainin Ride → Run → Ride

Today's winter #duathlontraining workout didn't end on the trail run as is typical. I went ahead & T¹ back into the bike. So rather than do the 6x5:00 ladder up front (T²) run, I did 3x5:00 (T²) run (T¹) 3x5:00 with the 2nd ride ladder faster/harder than the 1st ride ladder. It's challenging to push more watts & speed on that 2nd ride post run.

Out here at 11,500ft in frigid cold & gusting wind Out here at 11,500ft in frigid cold & gusting winds on closed roads with nobody for miles, there are no timeouts, no :20 of work for every :60. No huddle to recover. No coaches telling me what to do. No waterboys bringing me nutrition. No TV time outs, halftime break, delay of games, replays, flags. No vapid commercials. No 10 pundits telling me what's happening, annoying sideline interviewers or taunting "fans". No fugazzi political propaganda or asshat celebs. I'm not surrounded by staff if shit goes south. Just hours of non-stop work. Done only by me. With only me to count on.

The inaugural @saucony Chicago Powerman #duathlon The inaugural @saucony Chicago Powerman #duathlon 1994. Long course (6k 45k 6k). On the famous Wacker Drive. Just my 4th year dedicated to the sport & still finding my way. I came all the way over from California. This was not my only Powerman race & not the only one I did in Chicago. In fact, I did another in Evergreen Colorado up Mt Evans (at 14,265ft peak) CO. The Powerman series was essentially the longer course series of duathlon like Ironman is for #triathlon. And like Hawaii for triathlon, it's pinnacle race was in Zofingen 🇨🇭

What were you doing in 1994 😯
