Unless it's in the process of me getting better, faster, stronger than I was in the last race all so I can beat my competition in the next race. Racing IS a competition between you & the next guy. That's it's very lizard brain essence. I'm not striving to "be better than I was yesterday" because I want to be a better person. I'm not that altruistic. I'm striving to be better than I was yesterday so that I can beat my competition in races. That's it. There's no me trying to prove to me I can do things. I'm decades past that in my racing career. I already know what I can do. The singular goal of training & racing: do it faster. And ideally, faster than you. 😎👊

Today was a killer unexpected result, especially in late season October & going into a race week next week. A '25 PR time in my Friday #duathlontraining brick workout! By a HUGE margin of 1:08.

So consider across weeks or months, times separated by seconds not minutes:

𝟝𝟘𝟘,𝟘𝟘𝟘

I needed just 3,905 feet of vertical gain this weekend to meet a goal I've been working on for 10 months & have never before achieved: 500,000 vertical feet of elevation gain in 1 year. And I did it today. Day 291, well ahead of my Dec 31 deadline. This means, every vertical foot gained from today until Dec 31 is all bonus & will help set next year's goal number.

I knew going into today's workout at precisely what amount of vertical gain I would hit my goal IF I wanted to do it in 1 day. I've been watching weather. Contemplating routes. Trying to decide if I wanted it to happen on a long run or ride. I wasn't 100% sure if doing it all today would even be feasible given the fact I'd need a high mountain to get 3900ft + the impending weather. In fact, I didn't 100% commit to going for it all today until I got to Chasm Lake & assessed the weather & how I felt.

The rest is history they say. And this is that moment. The moment the goal was earned.

An unexpected result for today's RBR⁵ Friday mul

An unexpected result for today's RBR⁵ Friday multisport workout. As if last week wasn't a surprise (:01 off my '25 PB time), this was. Only :01 off last week's time. 1:07:28 (vs) 1:07:29 (vs) 1:07:30. But what makes it most unexpected is that my rides totally sucked. I just had no power. Whereas I can push ±35mph for much of the 5:00 intervals, I was lucky if I could touch 30mph today. What that means is overall less total mileage covered on the workout. So I knew immediately, I needed clean T¹ & T² and I needed faster 1 mile runs to keep near a fast overall time. In the end, the overall mileage was lower BUT the time to complete the workout was only :02 off my '25 PB time! And my 1mi run splits is where the magic happened & what kept me within range.

Think about this for a minute; 3 different attempts of the exact same workout, done the exact same way, on the same day of the week, at similar times, similar weather and in the end, only 2 tiny seconds separate the efforts. All the details, moving pieces & parts & only :02!! That IS the epitome of consistency & replication.

The hunt for 500,000 feet of vertical gain in '25

The hunt for 500,000 feet of vertical gain in '25 saw a slight hit in Sept's vert gain total. I like a +40k month, that feels good & is very attainable. (May - Aug average was 45,168ft. Sept was just 35,634ft.)

Sept started out strong with 34,000' by the end of my Switzerland 🇨🇭 training & race trip. BUT I knew I had to drive 16hrs back to San Diego for the final 2 weeks of Sept immediately after. And San Diego is all flat. Sea level flat. A good day of vert gain is measured in 100s, not 1000s, of vertical ft when starting at sea level. My biggest day was 1500ft, with a daily of less than 100ft 😄 But I should have a strong Oct to get back on track. This weekend alone, between this long ride on Sat & long run on Sun, netted me 8,538' of vert.

A scant :01 second would have matched my PR time from August and a mere :02 seconds would have given me a new PR in my Friday RBR⁵ workout. A :01 difference between today & August is as simple as a bobbled T¹ or T². That's all it takes to rob you of a PR or a podium in a race.

On August 28, prior to going to Switzerland 🇨🇭 to race, I set my 2nd 9x carry workout PR for the '25 season. I didn't post it in my feed, but I went 1:01:30.

Well, I certainly didn't expect today's results given all that's occurred in the last 30 days (10 day race trip to Europe, 4 days home, 16hr drive to CA, 2 weeks of house work, 16hr drive home), but it appears 103 miles of flat, beach, road, negative split running over 2 weeks in Cali paid some real dividends. Because today I went 1:02:07! A mere :37 off my '25 PR.

I certainly didn't see this coming. I'm more amped for my next race now (@spartanportugal 🇵🇹) as my fitness is still on point despite weeks of being out of my routines & being abnormally stressed. It's good to see a result like this this late into the race season. #letsrace 👊

Consider this timeline:

I went to Switzerland 🇨🇭 for 10 days to train & race.

I came home 🇺🇸 for a quick 4 days & then drove 16hrs nonstop to #carlsbadcalifornia where I'm from.

The very next morning I was grinding away on my rental property task lists.

I've now been in CA preparing my home for rental for 2 weeks, sleeping on the floor, on an air mattress, in an empty living room, with 1 duffel of recycled clothes, 1 blanket, a pillow, 1 towel, no furniture, no cookware or utensils, no tv & working 10hr days.

And yet I've fit in my running (13/14 days) getting 50 miles in per week (103.3mi as you read this) & regularly doing my 8mi/4mi negative split runs & really focusing on leg turnover speed & beach running (yep, I even have goals & a plan of action while I'm here}. I haven't had 50mi run weeks since I left CA. Where I live now is about big mountains, vertical gain, high elevations, long grinding ascents/descents & all trails.

Every bit of work I wanted to accomplish was. But it's time to hand over my CA home to a tenant placement service, I can't hang around indefinitely, head home to CO & start to prepare for the my international race. Which is.. IDK yet. Stay tuned!
