26:45 was the last result I posted of this workout on 10.16.20. It's another gold standard workout of mine that I keep records on.

-400m hill run sandbag 1x1 up, drop, run back, repeat 6x (15/20/25/15/20/25)

Today... I set my baseline time for '21. And, I suspect a time that will be hard for me to beat (or repeat) on this short, light, fast, hill run carry workout. I knew I felt fiery the moment I started running. So, I immediately leaned into the feeling, channeled some mojo from the recent spat of strong workout performances, & just went for it. When you see my time @ the end, you'll see it's not just a beating of my previous time, but an absolute obliteration of it.

𝑾¹ (10:05𝒂𝒎) 10x of a 1 km run + 10 pull-ups. I do it regularly, but it's not a gold standard, monitored & tracked workout. However, I've done it enough to know a good finish time (for me on my course). Today's 55min is average. But I also didn't push the pace. However, IMO, this workout is more about mental strength & attrition than speed. You have to have some level of mental fortitude to see thru 10x of 1km runs & 100 pull-ups broken up into 10R. It's boring, monotonous, uneventful & easy to loose interest & focus during. So I feel that keeping on the grind doing the same thing over & over for nearly 60min is more of a mental test than physical. And at some point in racing, having mental strength is as important as physical stamina. So the workout has real value.

𝑾² (5:05𝒑𝒎) simple ladder intervals in the garage at dusk. 3x of 5min ramping up speed (which means effort & power) from 30mph → 35 → 40ish by the 3rd interval. Increasing sustained efforts at 5mins. Short & sweet but a good juxtaposition to W¹.

A mindset I've cultivated is the idea that if I frame things as internal "challenges" I can open doors, have experiences, earn things I've been told (or heard) I can't. Additionally, doing so can be motivating, energy giving & end in an extra bump in confidence. I make sure to frame it in my mind positively & not out of anger, spite, revenge or hate. It's more like, "let's see if I can do it"... & w/ a smirk.

Examples? If I don't want to do a 2nd workout, making it a personal challenge to step up & get it done works. Thinking that age is holding me back, tho there's nothing I can do about it, I make it a challenge like, "yeah? fuck you age". When people say, "Oh Gillotti is this or he's that" I'll challenge myself to rise to the occasion to either prove otherwise, or challenge myself to double down & solidify their opinion if it's one I personally value (even if they don't). Being told I can't come back from a bad injury? Challenge. Being told by an establishment I can't have or do something. Or do it my way & break conventional wisdom & be successful? Challenge.

I didn't push the pace on the runs, carry overly heavy farmers, throw a really hefty bag. I wanted an "easier" but functional fitness day. In fact, my real focus was getting back to throwing spears. I've thrown none until now in '21 (14/15 today). In '20 I hit ALL spears thrown in the 6 @spartanrace I raced. In '19 I threw 5001 in training & only missed 1 in ±30 races. In '18, I missed ZERO race thrown spears out of ±30.

Soon after returning from CO this past Sept, I posted up a '20 PR time in my gold standard heavy carry workout of 36:45. Reread that... My '20 PR - after dozens upon dozens of times doing it - was 36:45. A big drop from 39's since I started it. But so what's the big deal? The big deal is that today, in Jan, after 3 weeks in CO, home for 5 days, hitting several other gold standard workouts already this week, I went 35:01! Thirty-five-ohhh-one. My fastest ever PR. Not just in '19 '20 or '21, but eva, by 1:44! Holy shit.

At best, while I was in Colorado for 3 weeks, I did 2 maybe 3 grip related workouts in 25 total workouts. So I needed to find out where I stood for grip, if I had lost anything, or felt rusty. I can report, I don't feel either is true. I feel as strong now as early Dec. Notice I'm even using my new 1-off Cobra 🐍 Kai grips (not easy).

So, that means that this week I've already covered light 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴, 𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘦𝘥 & 𝘨𝘳𝘪𝘱 following 3 weeks of 𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦. This gives me a strong indication of where I'm at for potentially racing OCR in JAX in Feb. But 1st, tomorrow is a mofo W¹.

I've been home a mere 4 days, took 1 of those days off to get back into a groove, went 23 days straight w/ 25 workouts while in CO & still reported feeling snappy yesterday. In fact, I felt so snappy, I decided to get right back into speed work. Now.

Not only did I get back into speed work, I very possibly already set a '20 PR! You'll see at the end of this vid that I hit a 29:13 in a gold standard workout I do religiously & have posted many times. My PR in '19, after over 40 repetitions of this workout, was 29:04. (See post 12.17.19 for 17 listed times that covered my final 8 wk block of speed before heading to CO.) This, right here, is 𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘥 𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘢 & 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘴 to go along w/ how I claimed to 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭 yesterday. So to hit a 29:13, in Jan, right out of the gate.... righteous start to my official race season prep.

Now you may think this is a "duh" result because I just came back from +3 weeks of intense high altitude endurance training. But it doesn't always immediately translate like this. For example, when I came home in Sept from 4 wks of getting after it in CO, I was utterly thrashed. There are a number of variables that can lead to how I feel in these scenarios & I have a pretty good grasp of why I believe I feel so snappy right now. But that's for me to know, & you to find out. 😁

Wow... IF I feel this good at @spartanrace JAX next month, watch out. Because I felt fucking superb. Shifting gears from unstructured long cardio altitude slow endurance workouts to short focused HIIT speed & using fresh muscles & grip felt rad. Especially when the payoff could be... actual face-2-face racing. Recall that?

I'm cautiously optimistic, & proceeding in a reserved manor, that we will be able to get back to OCR racing this year. These 17 sets of numbers equate to a 2x a week average of repeating this brick workout. In 77% of the workouts the goal (sub 30min) was met. And 100% of the time I put in max effort.

8 weeks of work. 8 weeks of consistency. 8 weeks of staying the course thru an injury, a holiday, a season & time change, losing my best friend of 13yrs. But I just find a way. Why? Because I know - for a fact - this level of single minded commitment to a goal or task I set my mind to is what keeps me sane. It's how I manage hardship. It's how I overcome sadness or stress. It's an ingredient to health, happiness & success that transcends just the actual task. These are more than just numbers to me. They are like a cipher that once understood, will tell you who I am.
